Stevie Wonder 1974 concert on German TV show Musikladen/Beat Club
Stevie Wonder 1974 concert on German TV show Musikladen/Beat Club. I recorded from the European TV channel VH1 in 2003. I wish this would be released on DVD! If someone can help me identify the musicians, it would be great. One of the ladies, Afro and a polo shirt, singing backing vocals is Denice Williams. She was part of Wonder's female background singing group Wonderlove. I think this is the partial lineup, based on what Stevie says at 23.15: Reggie McBride plays bass. Michael "Mike" Sembello on guitar and keys, Ollie E. Brown on drums. Song list: 1. Jam 2. Contusion 3. Higher Ground 4. Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing 5. I Can See The Sun In Late December 6. He's Misstra Know-It-All 7. Living For The City 8. Superstition

The Temptations: China Doll
This is from the Temptations 1976 LP "Wings Of Love", a "critical and commercial failure", as Wikipedia states. It quickly hit the cut-out bins and by the time I stumbled upon it in the early 80's, it was all over the record shops of my home town for under the equivalence of a dollar. But now, over 30 years later, maybe it can get a recognition, as the fine album it is? Perhaps even a CD release? This album rocks! From Wikipedia: Wings of Love is a 1976 album by The Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) label. The album was an unsuccessful release, both commercially and critically. Wings of Love's only single, "Up the Creek (Without a Paddle)" was co-written by Sly Stone, the inspiration for many of the Temptations' late 1960s/early 1970s "psychedelic soul" records; because of tax reasons, he could not take a publishing credit on the song. Stone and other members of the Family Stone appear on "Up the Creek", as well as "Sweet Gypsy Jane" and "China Doll" Producer Jeffrey Bowen preferred Dennis Edwards to the rest of the group, and wanted to produce an Edwards solo album instead of a group album. As a result, Bowen de-emphasized the rest of the group's vocals and placed them at levels far below Edwards' leads, prompting his dismissal as the Temptations' producer after this album's release. Unsurprisingly, Edwards sings lead on all but one of the songs on the album, leaving "China Doll" in the capable hands of Richard Street. The upshot of Bowen's obsession with Edwards is ...

Billy Preston: Happy (Instrumental)
I am a huge fan of Billy Preston. Collecting his albums is a never ending labor of love, he recorded so much and the majority of his work is very, very good too. Billy was of course nothing less than a genius, a fantastic musician, and he had a wonderful soulful gospel-trained voice that I can't get enough of. He passed away in 2006 under very sad circumstances. I am sure that had he survived, he would have continued to produce good, funky music from the heart, like only he could. This track is from Billy's 1977 Motown LP "A Whole New Thing", which went to #49 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. The single "Wide Stride" (#33 R&B, 1977) was an instrumental funk jam, Billy's signature, and the follow-up "I'm Really Gonna Miss You" got to #59. Once again, commercial failure is not equal to low quality of the product. "A Whole New Thing" is in my view one of Billy's strongest after his heydays in the early 70's with "Outa-Space", "Will It Go Round In Circles", "Space Race" and "Nothing From Nothing". Billy produced the LP himself, with the exception of three songs. On this LP, Billy teamed up with fellow-keyboard maestro Truman Thomas. Truman produced a trio of tracks with a distinct Sly Stone-feel; "Whole New Thing", "Complicated Sayings" and "You Got Me Buzzin'" which are the three strongest songs on this LP. Truman Thomas is one of those underground behind-the-scenes-guys. He plays on such notable albums as Aretha Franklin's "Live at the Fillmore West" and "Aretha Arrives ...

COMMENT ON Ollie-E.-Brown

Ollie E. Brown (sometimes credited as simply Ollie Brown[1]) is an American drummer, percussionist and record producer. A prolific session musician, Brown has performed on over a hundred albums in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.[2] Brown was also half of the American dance-pop duo Ollie & Jerry, which had a Top 10 hit with "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us" in 1984.[3]

Contents

Early years

Brown was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1952.[2] By 1976 he had already performed as a drummer or percussionist on a dozens of albums, including I Can Stand a Little Rain by Joe Cocker, 1990 and A Song for You by The Temptations, It's My Pleasure by Billy Preston, and Black and Blue by The Rolling Stones. In the 1970s Brown also performed on albums by Diana Ross, Van Morrison, Leo Sayer, and Sly and the Family Stone.[2]

Along with Preston and pianist Ian Stewart, Brown was also part of The Rolling Stones' touring band in the mid 1970s.[1]

Raydio and Ollie & Jerry

In the late 1970s Brown performed on Raydio's self-titled debut album.[2] This led to a partnership with Raydio bassist and fellow Detroit native Jerry Knight, who was also a prolific session musician.[4] Together, the two formed the duo Ollie & Jerry, and recorded the song "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us" for the 1984 breakdancing-themed film Breakin'. The song was successful, reaching number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984.[3]

Ollie & Jerry also performed on the soundtrack for the 1984 Breakin' sequel Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. Their single "Electric Boogaloo" was the lead track from the soundtrack, but was less successful than its predecessor, reaching only number 45 on the R&B chart, and not charting at all on the Billboard Top 40.[3][4]

The Breakin' 2 soundtrack album itself, however, did chart, reaching number 25 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart, and number 52 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.[4]

Later work

During and after his work with Ollie & Jerry, Brown continued his prolific behind-the-scenes work, producing or performing on dozens of albums between 1980 and 2000. Highlights include the number-one album Bad by Michael Jackson, and the Ray Parker, Jr. single "Ghostbusters", which Brown produced. In the 1980s, Brown also produced or performed on albums by Blondie, The Jacksons, DeBarge and Quincy Jones.[2]

Brown currently works in the real estate industry.[5]
